Karimov's loneliness
Since May of last year, President Karimov suffered a crisis - he found himself in a state of outcast after the events in Andijan, turning away even those who, despite criticism, tried to provide not only economic assistance, but also moral. After September 2001, when the United States launched the operation in Afghanistan, Karimov had a chance to become not only a full member of the antiterrorist coalition, providing airfields to accommodate NATO military units, but also try to change domestic policy.

Results of the competition
Dear readers, in the last issue we ended the competition for publishing articles on water resources problems in Central Asia, which our magazine held together with the Global Water Partnership organization - (Global Water Partnership, www.gwpforum.org/servlet/PSP).

Patriotism - the last refuge of scoundrels
Or if you translate this famous phrase more precisely, for villains the last refuge is patriotism. The meaning, of course, varies, but not much. More important than the other. Any critical person, and a professional journalist, as a rule, a priori, is considered not a patriot. In fact, this is the main element of the attack of the authorities, especially in authoritarian countries - why don't you write good things about the country, why don't you support the good impulses of the authorities? Are you not a patriot?

Restless on Kyrgyz-Uzbek border
In connection with the recent events in the Fergana Valley, the temporary closure of borders or the tightening of border regime between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan create additional difficulties for the local population of both countries. As a result, the conflict potential increases, which negatively affects the state relations of the neighboring republics.

Boundless steppe
Until now, the borders of the country are fairly transparent, which results in a large flow, including transit, of illegal migration. However, this is not the only border problem.

Lost generation
While many developing countries have been able to expand access to education and increase literacy, Tajikistan is still moving in the opposite direction. Currently, the education system in Tajikistan is experiencing a serious financial crisis. The social status of teachers has decreased, their work is poorly paid. And therefore in many schools of the republic there are not enough teachers in the main subjects. In addition, corruption reduces the value of certificates issued, and the difficult economic situation forces parents to send children to work instead of school.

What is the "Manas"?
A number of nongovernmental organizations in Kyrgyzstan require that the governments of the United States and Kyrgyzstan clearly define the duration of their stay at the Manas airbase. On the eve of his first official visit to Russia, the head of the Kyrgyz state made an official statement in which he demanded to finish the negotiation process on the future presence of American military forces in the country before June 1, 2006.

Silence is gold
At first glance, it seems strange that the population of an entire country suffers humiliation from its own authorities, but does not show any emotions and signs of discontent. International human rights organizations, the UN and the European Parliament are adopting resolutions about total human rights violations in the country, and foreign media are shocking their readers and viewers with the boundless and reckless power of the Turkmen dictator. And only the Turkmen themselves are silent ...
